Africa Re – A new logo for a vibrant future

The African continent is growing. The rise in its economy and the development of its financial services has been considerable.

Supporting this economic growth is a business about to celebrate forty years serving the African continent. The African Reinsurance Corporation – Africa Re.

Mr Corneille Karekezi, Group Managing Director and CEO of the African Reinsurance Corporation, on the 25th June, at the event of the 42nd AIO Conference in Tunisia and the announcement of the winners of the African Insurance Awards, released details of The Corporation’s new logo.
Said Mr Karekezi, “We have decided to change the logo for various reasons, the major one being that next year we are going to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Since Africa Re has been created, the continent has changed in many aspects. We are assisting to the rise of Africa everyone is talking about and we believe we want to renew our commitment to the continent, we want to strengthen our position in our core market which are African states and we want to send a strong signal to our stakeholders and customers to tell them we are here for another 40 years, 100 years to be close to you.

The logo is a succinct symbol of an organisation. The logo for Africa Re will be at the cornerstone of our identity. It will be a solid foundation on which all our communications with our various stakeholders and customers will be based on so it will be the most representation of the corporation, which is seen by the public.”

He continued, “The Africa Re brand is designed to convey the distinctive essence of Africa Re. Each element of our brand has been carefully selected to work together to reinforce Africa Re’s Mission, Vision and Values.”

“The new logo is intentionally bold and forward-looking, characteristics which spring from The Corporation’s mission: To foster the development of the insurance and reinsurance industry in Africa, To promote the growth of national, regional and sub-regional underwriting and retention capacities and To support the African economic development. It consists of several components which speak in an articulate and compelling way: – The icon and the logotype – are the cornerstone of our identity.

The icon is the illustration of the continent of Africa on a globe. Whilst the logotype is the words ‘Africa Re’

Mr Karekezi continues, “The icon, a globe of the African continent, identifies Africa Re as a global company based in Africa, reinforcing the size and strength of the organisation. The stripes on the globe illustrate that the world is constantly turning and reinforces the interdependency of companies and countries.”

“The tail on the initial letter of ‘Africa’ indicates the building of a knot. It overlaps itself reassuringly to portray security, an essential element of our business. It also symbolises the beginnings of a star, an emblem of achievement.

The new Africa Re logo uses three colours: blue, gold and white. Together they display a regal nature, and are associated with qualities of authority, trust, strength and professionalism. They portray Africa Re as a world leader. “

Mr Karekezi concluded, “The final component is the logo type which is made of the words Africa Re already known by the majority of customers and stakeholders. The tail on the initial letter of Africa indicates the building of a knot. It overlaps itself reassuringly to portray security an essential element of our business. It also symbolises the beginning of a star, an emblem of achievement. All three brand elements of our new logo are positioned together and sit on a solid block of colour. The overall result is a subtle yet powerful logo type.”
