As part of an ongoing quest to strengthen its governance, regulatory and stakeholder capabilities, Old Mutual Emerging Markets (OMEM) announced the appointment of Joel Baepi as Director of Governance, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs.
Baepi, who is currently Old Mutual’s Chief Legal Adviser, will take on his expanded role from 1 February 2016 and join the OMEM Executive Committee. He will continue to head up both the Legal and Corporate Secretariat functions and will now also assume responsibility for OMEM’s Corporate Affairs.
OMEM Chief Executive Ralph Mupita said the business has a unique opportunity to create a unified governance, regulatory and corporate affairs cluster at OMEM level. “We are proud to appoint Joel to this new role and wish him all the best. More about Joel Baepi
· Baepi holds a BA degree in political science and a LLB from the University of Cape Town as well as a Master of Laws in corporate law from the University of Johannesburg. In 1998 he was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
· Before joining Old Mutual in 2011, he was a Director at General Motors, where he advised the board and executive committee on compliance and regulatory issues. Prior to this, Baepi held various positions including directorships at Cliffe Dekker and Bowman Gilfillan, with responsibilities ranging from overseeing commercial agreements to leading due diligence investigations and advising on BEE financing transactions.
