In February 2016 global Insurance Careers Month was launched to inspire young people to choose insurance as a career, share what makes the industry a great one to work in, and to increase awareness among millennials about the dynamic career opportunities that are available in the risk management and insurance industry. Leila Moonda, General Manager: Governance and Transformation at the South Africa Insurance Association (SAIA), welcomes the introduction of the Insurance Careers Month initiative and says that it’s necessary to introduce new, young blood into the industry, especially in South Africa where youth unemployment remains a severe problem.
“The growth of South Africa’s insurance industry has the ability to unlock economic growth in the country. Without insurance no one would invest in businesses, infrastructure development or any other initiatives. Insurance is the bedrock of any economy. It is therefore crucial for South African insurers to showcase the career opportunities that they offer and to educate, engage and attract young dynamic talent to the industry.”
Furthermore, she adds that it is an exciting time to be working in the industry and that innovative technological advancements are revolutionising the way in which the sector operates. The tech-savvy millennials therefore have a key role to play in driving this technological innovation.
