SA’s budding actuaries to display their skills at the 2019 MiWay 24-hour Hackathon

By: MiWay Insurance

The stage is already set for this year’s MiWay ‘by invitation only’ Hackathon. The event will see Honours and final-year students from leading South African universities battling it out to find out whose financial modelling skills are the best.

It is expected that 25 top students from 5 leading universities from around the country will be in Centurion, Gauteng on 13 April 2019. They will be bracing themselves to take on the challenge of developing a predictive model based on historical data for MiWay Insurance. The catch is that they have only 24 hours to conceptualise, design and build the model.

"The event gives students a taste of the things we do at MiWay, all packaged as a fun experience. It also gives students the chance to compete with others and to possibly take home some prize money and bragging rights. By showcasing their skills, students get the opportunity to be earmarked for possible future employment." says Jaco Cloete, Head of Actuarial at MiWay.

At stake is a cash prize of R20 000 for the winner; R5 000 for the runner-up and R3 000 for the third-placed student.

“This is the second annual event of its type to be hosted by MiWay and will have a larger prize pool than last year’s event. The modelling challenge will also be even more difficult with a larger dataset and a problem that will require a high level of out of the box thinking.” says Cloete.
