IRMSA Warns One in Three Risk Managers Face Threats Amid Anti-Corruption Efforts

One in every three South African risk managers faces backlash, threats, or intimidation when actively mitigating public interest risks says industry body the Institute for Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA)

And says the organisation these threats are pervasive in both the public and private sectors, underscoring the need for a robust and independent oversight body like the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

New threat levels against risk managers were determined through wide ranging engagement with IRMSA members across all organisational levels

As a result, IRMSA has now reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the SIU in its vital role of safeguarding communities and ensuring accountability within the risk management framework.

SIU head Andy Mothibi has highlighted the pervasive nature of corruption in government procurement, where billions of rand are stolen faster than they can be recovered.

His leadership has seen nearly R137 billion recovered from tainted tenders and contracts, and R54 billion in potential future losses prevented by dismantling syndicates.

In a landscape where risk practitioners are increasingly threatened for advocating against the abuse of public assets and maladministration, IRMSA says its support for the SIU is more critical than ever.

For the risk community, IRMSA says the SIU's role is pivotal in promoting and preserving a functional state by investigating incidents of malfeasance, theft, fraud, and corruption. The SIU's efforts enhance risk management practices by setting benchmarks for ethical conduct and thorough investigations. Their work not only safeguards public interest but also reinforces the integrity of organisations across various sectors, contributing to a culture of accountability and transparency.

Supporting the SIU transcends mere compliance; it is about nurturing a culture of accountability and transparency. Their efforts directly contribute to the enhancement of risk management practices by establishing benchmarks for ethical conduct and thorough investigation. Organisations prioritizing risk management, resilience, and integrity benefit from stronger reputations and enhanced operational sustainability. Continued support for the SIU remains paramount in advancing South Africa’s developmental imperatives, fostering public confidence in our ability to manage risks effectively.

IRMSA says considering the heightened threat levels against risk managers in South Africa, it is imperative for professionals in this field to adopt proactive strategies to safeguard their personal and professional well-being.

Firstly, risk managers should prioritise building a robust support network within their organisations and industry. Engaging with professional bodies such as IRMSA can provide access to resources, training, and a community of peers who face similar challenges. This network can offer emotional support, practical advice, and a platform to share experiences and best practices, reinforcing a collective approach to overcoming threats.

Secondly, staying informed about the latest developments in corruption and risk management practices is crucial. Keeping abreast of the work and findings of the can provide valuable insights into the modus operandi of corrupt entities and the measures being implemented to combat them. Risk managers should leverage these insights to refine their own risk assessment and mitigation strategies, ensuring they are well-equipped to identify and address potential threats proactively. Continuous education and training in cyber investigations, forensic accounting, and data analytics are essential to stay ahead of sophisticated schemes.

Lastly, maintaining a high level of vigilance and adopting comprehensive personal safety measures are non-negotiable in this volatile environment. Risk managers should implement strict protocols for reporting and responding to threats, including utilising whistleblowing hotlines and case-monitoring systems established by bodies like the SIU. It is also advisable to engage with legal and security professionals to devise personal safety plans, especially when facing direct threats or intimidation.

By fostering a culture of accountability and transparency within their organizations and supporting the efforts of the SIU, risk managers can contribute to a safer and more resilient professional landscape, ultimately enhancing the integrity and sustainability of their operations.
