Bridging the Human and Technical Sides of Finance

In an enlightening interview, Tony from COVER sits down with 2024 Financial Planner of the Year, Rudolph Geldenhuys, CFP®, to uncover the key to his success at the age of 33. A senior planner at WealthUp, Rudolph emphasises the importance of managing the tension between the technical aspects of financial planning and the human side of money. For him, understanding clients' dreams and navigating their fears is as crucial as solving their financial problems.

Rudolph's journey to becoming Financial Planner of the Year wasn’t straightforward. He initially entered the competition in 2022 but withdrew, feeling unprepared. However, the 2023 Financial Planning Institute (FPI) convention reignited his passion, and he seised the opportunity to enter in 2024. His motivation was twofold: overcoming personal insecurities and a desire to grow and become better at his craft. He describes the competition as a stretching experience that sharpened his focus on his "why"—helping clients align their financial decisions with their life purpose.

He attributes much of his success to the community around him, both within WealthUp and the broader financial planning industry, where mentorship and collaboration were pivotal. Rudolph also highlights the role of technology and paraplanners in freeing him up to focus on what he loves most: building relationships with clients.

His advice to young financial planners is clear: find your "why," connect with clients on a human level, and don’t hesitate to reach out to mentors or peers in the industry. Rudolph’s passion for financial planning goes beyond just delivering technical solutions—it’s about changing lives, one financial plan at a time.
