This session gives a broad overview of the application of the Islamic law of succession in South Africa via an Islamic will. The presentation looks at the two ways in which the Islamic law of succession and administration of estate can be applied in South Africa. The discussion would be around liability claims, testate succession claims and intestate succession claims.

About the speaker: Dr. Muneer Abduroaf
Dr Muneer Abduroaf is an admitted attorney and senior law lecture at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Faculty of Private Law. He inter alia teaches the law of succession to the second year students at UWC, as the lecturer and module convenor. Dr Abduroaf is also the Islamic law of succession lecturer at the International Peace College of South Africa (IPSA), based in Cape Town. He a member of the Fatwa Department of the Muslim Judicial Council (SA) where he inter alia sits as an ad hoc judge of the Shariah Court. Dr Abduroaf’s academic qualifications include an LLB degree in Shariah law, an LLB degree in South African law, an LLM degree in International Law, and an LLD degree in Constitutional Theory. The title of his doctoral thesis is ‘The impact of South African Law on the Islamic Law of Succession’.
