The Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA) has successfully concluded its inaugural Insurance Skills Indaba, held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand on the 19th and 20th of March, 2025. Under the theme "A Responsive Disruption Through Skills Innovation," the Indaba brought together industry leaders, policymakers, government officials, and professionals to foster collaboration, networking, and the sharing of best practices.  

Emphasising INSETA's commitment to collaboration, CEO Gugu Mkhize stated in her address, “We pride ourselves on collaborating with multiple stakeholders to facilitate skills development and, crucially, to ensure that the people being trained are ready for the world of work.” Gugu also highlighted the presence of 40 exhibitors who are key partners in driving meaningful discussions on upskilling young South Africans.  

The two-day Indaba featured a diverse programme of speakers, workshops, and interactive sessions. Discussions centred on critical themes such as bridging socio-economic gaps through digital innovation, the role of AI and drone technology, digital transformation, regulatory compliance, and the intersection of insurance and sustainability.  

Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi reiterated the government's commitment to collaborating with INSETA to develop skills that will boost the economy and provide opportunities for young people. “We registered 650,000 [unemployed youth] that needed to be re-skilled last year, and we are proud with the partners that we have, now that we are ready to take those to be re-skilled so that they can be relevant to the economy,” said Lesufi.  

The Indaba also showcased innovative approaches to skills development. Queen Ndlovu, CEO of QP Drone Tech, a panellist at the conference, discussed her company's work in training unemployed youth in drone operation and AI technology for disaster risk management and response efforts. Ndlovu acknowledged the initial scepticism towards this groundbreaking technology but emphasised the importance of developing these skills for the future.  

The event further included the INSETA Excellence Recognition Awards, celebrating outstanding contributions to skills development within the sector, and the Insure-Careers Exhibition, connecting 2000 learners with career opportunities and live employment services.

INSETA's dedication to promoting collaboration and driving skills innovation was a key feature of the Indaba, reinforcing its pivotal role in transforming the insurance sector.
