The Origin of KEU: Pioneering Entertainment Insurance in South Africa

KEU, a UMA specialising in entertainment insurance, has been a cornerstone of South Africa’s industry for 24 years. Founded in 2001 by Denise Hattingh, KEU emerged from a gap created by major insurers withdrawing from the entertainment market. Initially operating as Kaleidoscope Entertainment and Writers, KEU’s early days were marked by determination and adaptability. “In your 20s, you’re more courageous,” Denise recalls. “We started with a single phone line and a commitment to keep things local and tailored.”
Over time, KEU established itself as a trusted partner, offering bespoke coverage for diverse risks, from aerial stunts to multi-day events. Denise emphasises, “Each risk is unique. The underwriting process must reflect the nuances, as liability claims can surface years later.” KEU has not only adapted to legislative changes but also embraced innovation.
Marketing head Iola Edmayr highlights their balance of technology and personal relationships. “We’ve introduced broker portals for automated quotes, but brokers can still call us anytime. It’s about ensuring they feel supported,” she says. This hybrid approach maintains KEU’s reputation for combining expertise with approachability.
As KEU prepares for a major rebrand and website refresh in early 2025, the focus remains on innovation and accessibility. Initiatives include animation videos explaining coverage scenarios and interactive content featuring Denise and Iola. “We want brokers to see us as people they work with, not just another corporate entity,” Iola shares.
KEU’s legacy of credibility, adaptability, and personal connections positions it as a leader in a dynamic market, ready to face future challenges while staying true to its roots.
